When Robbins, one of the big names in replacement Miata tops, needs an installer in Orange County, it points people to The Prestige Companies. David brought his 1992 here on that recommendation. The shop's own project gallery shows tops on a 1990, a 2001 and a 2008 Miata, including bonded and defrosting glass rear windows, and owners add 1999 and 2006 cars to the list. Eric's crew also handles interiors: seats, door panels and dashboards that the California sun has had its way with.

Honest advice, even when it costs them a sale

Martin brought in his '07 expecting to need a new top because a flap had come loose. Eric re-trimmed it, treated the weather seals, told him the top had plenty of life left, and didn't charge him. Richard showed up with a top he had already bought, and Eric honestly told him he'd have been better off with a glass window, then installed it in a day and stood behind the job anyway.

Jim's 2007 MX5 got a new black cloth top and a fix for a clogged rain rail, the drain channel that causes those mysterious wet floors when it backs up. Chris got a heads-up to replace his top latches while he was at it, the kind of tip you only get from someone who's done a lot of these.

Know before you go
