Haag Performance
A family-run Lodi race shop where Mike Haag has been building Mazda engines for decades, including Spec Miata motors and turbo builds for Miata owners.

Mike Haag started working on Mazdas at a Southern California dealership in 1974, spent years as the chief Mazda engine builder for Rebello Racing, and then hung out his own shingle. Today Haag Performance calls itself a Mazda NC and Spec MX-5 race shop, and the Spec Miata class lists it as a preferred race shop for engines, transmissions and rear ends. If your Miata's next chapter involves a racing number, this is a good place to start the conversation.

Engines that come back stronger
Steve's 1991 track car lost its engine, and Mike's crew had a replacement in and the car back on the road quickly, sorting the clutch, mounts, seals, timing belt and water pump while they were in there. When a small issue popped up afterward, Mike fixed it fast. "Oh, and my car runs much faster than it ever did," wrote Steve S.
Alex needed a new engine for a Miata race car, so Mike built one from a donor core and tuned it on the dyno. "I know where I will go for the next Miata racing engine!" wrote Alex M. Street builds get the same attention: one Miata owner describes planning a turbocharged 1.8-liter build with Mike, then coming back for a rebuilt Mazdaspeed differential with new gears and a six-speed swap on a '94.
Know before you go
Haag is a performance and race-engine shop, not the place for an oil change or a check-engine light on your commuter. Plan your build, bring your goals, and expect race-shop pricing for race-shop work.
